Let's Do That Again.

Do you remember when you were a kid, and your parents took you to somewhere like Euclid Beach or Cedar Point, and you waited in line for hours for a ride, and it only took five minutes for the roller coaster to reach the bottom, and you got off the ride and your first thought was "let's do it again"? Well that's how I feel today.

On Tuesday evening it became clear that the voters in northeast Ohio... or in Ohio and America for that matter... were not buying what we were selling. We stood up for saving General Motors and good Union jobs. And the voters sided with the folks who said that was a bad idea. We began a long journey towards making health care a right in America, and the voters sided with the folks that called that "socialism". We talked about the future in green energy jobs, saving the environment and making mass transit a reality in northeast Ohio. And the messagefell on deaf ears. We talked about members of Congress accepting personal responsibility for the recession their votes had caused. And the Cleveland Plain Dealer thought the idea was "unbelievable".

But let's get back to the roller coaster. Slowly but surely in January, February and March the campaign inched its way forward as a team was assembled; a headquarters in Stow was opened; fund-raising was begun; and a message was crafted. And as we came ever so slowly to the top of the first hill, peeking over the rail to see firsthand what lay ahead, the reality started to set in. The primary was upon us! And in the blink of an eye we sped to the bottom of the first hill ina blinding rush and we won with a 3-to1 margin! The race to November was upon us.

And all of a sudden we found ourselves on the public stage. Talking about "getting back on track" and "made in America" as if it was a new found mantra. And the twists and turns started coming at us as we are pushed from side to side in our seat. Bill's Brigade grows from a pipe dream to a band of dedicated volunteers knocking on doors from Conneaut to Stow (115 miles by the way); the "call center" breaks a record for a Congressional campaign; the endorsements roll in; the pace quickens and the real fun begins. Large crowds with Ted, great events with Lee, Saturdays in Mentor with Schneider, on the stage in Ashtabula with Mary Jane Trapp, and Geauga county fair with David Pepper. A ride to be remembered.

Hey, the alternative was staying home. And that is no alternative at all. As I told that wonderful crowd at my house on election night: I am proud of what we did this year. And the only real alternative would have been to sit on the sidelines in this momentous year. And that would have been sad. No. We took a good clean shot at history and this time the ump called it a strike. Remember: If you bat .300 you are a hero. And you also strike out 7 out of 10 times you are at the plate. As General Douglas MacArthur said.... Never mind, not today.

Time to get off the ride for now. With one sincere thought. Thank you.

And it hasn't all been on foot. Although Bill's Brigade...from Solon to Mentor to Stow, Geneva and Conneaut...has actually knocked on 7,322 doors...the "new media" based on the "old techniques" has a surprise in store for the Congressman from Virginia. My manager Mark Ditz from the old school teamed up with my field director Tyler Allchin from the new wave....and what a stew they have come up with. All the consultants in Washington and all the talking heads in New York are now coming to realize what we have known for six months. Early voting has hit Ohio like a runaway freight train.

Want some numbers to savor over the weekend? Here goes. You heard this directly from your candidate. And I am right. There will be 250,000 votes cast in this congressional race. And a full 100,000 of those votes do not belong to any organized party. Not even the Democratic party! And guess what. Of those 100,000 independent voters...over 28,000 of them have already gotten their ballots by mail. And along with their ballot, they have received an O'Neill brochure proclaiming "Made In America" is the pathway out of the recession.

Where does this message come from? The heart. Think about it. We are talking about our money here. And if the government is going to buy their way out of the recession, they really have no need to stimulate the Chinese economy. Buy American, put American factories back to work, and let the free economy take over. It worked for the first 200 years...why not now.

Last word. If I don't see you this week....thanks. It's been a great journey.

As a matter of principle, or law, I stand for the proposition that any government contract entered into, from this point forward, MUST have a Made In America clause. And that is non-negotiable.

At a public meeting last week a person in the audience decided to challenge my Made In America stance. And the question went something like this: "Judge, what if the wind mill parts are not available from an American supplier? Surely you would not hold up the whole project, would?" And my response probably defines the difference between myself and others who use Made In America as a slogan. Yes. Yes, I would hold up the entire project until American parts could be found. And the reasoning is simple. If you create a demand, the supply will follow. We have empty factories, unemployed workers, and a stalled economy. That is no time to be stimulating the Chinese economy.

This issue has actually made door-to-door campaigning fun. I simply go to the door and say "I'm Bill O'Neill, I'm the Democrat running for Congress, and I believe 'Made In America' should be the law of the land!" And then the conversation just begins to roll and it is all good. In Mentor ( Thursdays) Solong(Wednesdays) and Stow (Saturdays) the team is out and the message is ringing from roof-tops.

Oh, and did I mention? We sent that message to 7,300 independent early voters yesterday. Postage wasn't cheap, but the opportunity to reach that many voters with such a crisp message was truly cool. Hey, send me $4.40 and I will send the message out ten more times today!

We have factories, infrastructure and skilled workers. We need jobs. Tragically, one number jumps out when we look at (1) what the government is doing and (2) what the government should be doing. Did you know that last year, of all the new wind turbines constructed in America, a full 70% of them were built outside of America? That's crazy! We have no business spending government dollars to stimulate the economies of Germany, China, India and Japan."

The article says:

“Dilly-dallying by the House meant that the Senate went on holiday without acting at all on a measure that at least would have renewed the prior extensions. The result of all of this: About 39,000 Ohioans have lost their unemployment benefits and another 100,000 may be without help by the end of this month.

The main reason that Congress is balking at extending the safety net is one we would normally applaud: a sudden outbreak of concern about the nation's ballooning deficit and debt. But suddenly slamming the door on millions of needy Americans is penny-wise, pound-foolish and cruel at a time when the economy simply cannot reabsorb them. “

At a time when people are going through long periods of unemployment, incumbent Steve LaTourette has put politics over people. The incumbent has voted to raise the debt ceiling on three separate occasions previously and against limiting spending. When it came time for protecting Northeastern Ohio’s struggling families, politics has trumped common sense.

Extending aid to the unemployment provides $1.64 in economic stimulus for every dollar spent according to Moody’s Economy.com. The Congressional Budget Office has cited the extension of benefits as one the most cost efficient and effective forms of economic stimulus.

June 5th Campaign Kick Off in Mentor with the Governor

Come join the campaign and the Governor in Mentor to kick off Ohio's push toward victory in November. (1) And when the day was done, the United States Congress had extended an historic opportunity for those 21,000 residents to participate in the American dream. For the first time in history, they could buy health insurance EVEN WITH PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS. Amazing. Every single member of Congress from Northeast Ohio (Kucinich, Fudge, Sutton, Ryan, Boccieri) voted to dramatically reform health care in America…with the exception of one. Congressman Steve Latourette once again voted NO. No to providing health insurance access to 21,000 constitutents. He sided with the insurance companies and voted against his constitutents and basic fairness. His vote was wrong. I got nearly 40% of the vote in 2008. I need an additional 20,000 votes to replace Steve Latourette in Congress in 2010. I think I found them tonight. Insurance companies will be required to insure both healthy and sick people...and not be permitted to drop you when you get sick. And finally, the Congressional Budget Office says it will REDUCE THE FEDERAL DEFICIT. Is this bill perfect? No. Is it time to vote. Yes. And once again, our Congressman, Steve Latourette will be forced out into the open to vote against the interests of jobs, health care, and fairness. Check out our home page video...it is that exact intersection where I made my announcement speech! This morning's Sun editorial suggests this is a good time, since they are going to have to move the Rapid station anyway...to think about going south and East. You know back in 1920 when the Blue Line ended at Van Aken, all the land past that point was a few farmhouses and small businesses. Today it is Cuyahoga Community College, small manufacturing plants in Solon and Bedford, jobs and neighborhoods. The Blue Line...which is funded with federal dollars...is an ecologically sound transportation alternative.
